In this tutorial we will show detailed instructions and debugging info, in order to deploy a DPDK enabled OVS on an Openstack Newton environment, on Ubuntu 16.04.
First and foremost you must have a working Openstack Newton environment with OVS networking.
Secondly you need to have a DPDK enabled OVS, built and running on your system.
The easy way to do that is to just download and configure the official package.
Following these instructions:
https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/using-open-vswitch-with-dpdk-on-ubuntusudo apt-get install openvswitch-switch-dpdk 1 sudo apt-get install openvswitch-switch-dpdk sudo update-alternatives --set ovs-vswitchd /usr/lib/openvswitch-switch-dpdk/ovs-vswitchd-dpdk 1 sudo update-alternatives --set ovs-vswitchd /usr/lib/openvswitch-switch-dpdk/ovs-vswitchd-dpdk This will install the ovs with dpdk in it. The proposal of the MediaNet Lab in the first open-call of the SoftFIRE project has been accepted and therefore MediaNet Lab will participate in the first experiments of the SoftFIRE project. SoftFIRE aims at creating an ecosystem of organizations around the technological field of NFV/SDN and and its evolution towards 5G developments. In order to achieve this goal, SoftFIRE plans to aggregate as many as possible organizations and people around an enabling platform. The SoftFIRE platform consists in a federated testbed that comprises very different experimental frameworks and is available for experimenting new services, applications and functional extensions of the platform.

In the framework of the EC-funded research project VITAL, MediaNet lab presented at EC premises during the second review meeting, the v2.0 of the VITAL NFV Manager: A lightweight NFV Orchestrator, capable of composing, deploying, instantiating and managing a Virtual Satellite Network (i.e. a Network Service which includes beyond the terrestrial VNFs, also virtualised Satellite Network Functions). The v2.0 of the NFV Manager has been upgraded with a graphical user interface, which provides resource monitoring per NFVI-PoP of the NFV infrastructure and per instantiated Network Service/Virtual Satellite Network.
The NFV Manager is compatible with the Openstack CCP and Opendaylight Platform, and More >
FP7 ICT T-NOVA was organised and hosted at NCSR Demokritos premises by MediaNet Lab. Project T-NOVA has officially started at 1/1/2014 and its duration is 3 years. The project is coordinated by NCSRD (Dr. A. Kourtis).
With the aim of promoting the NFV concept, T-NOVA introduces a novel enabling framework, allowing operators not only to deploy virtualized Network Functions (NFs) for their own needs, but also to offer them to their customers, as value-added services. Virtual network appliances (gateways, proxies, firewalls, transcoders, analyzers etc.) can be provided on-demand as-a-Service, eliminating the need to acquire, install and maintain specialized hardware at customers’ premises.

Medianet Lab will lead and coordinate FP7 Integrated Project T-NOVA that was submitted in ICT Call 11 (FP7-ICT-2013-11) at Objective ICT-2013.1.1.: Future Networks.
T-NOVA project plans to exploit the emerging concept of Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV), migrating network functions originally performed by hardware elements to virtualised infrastructures, deployed as software components. T-NOVA allows operators not only to deploy virtualized Network Functions (NFs) for their own needs, but also to offer them to their customers, as value-added services. T-NOVA leverages and enhances cloud management architectures for the elastic provision and (re-) allocation of IT resources assigned to the hosting of Network More >
